How to: Hem your jeans

Since I am only 5'3" (and a half! lol)  I have to hem most of my jeans and pants so I don't have pools of fabric covering my shoes.  While pants are pretty easy, jeans are another story,  How do you hem them without getting rid of the original hem?  I'll show you how!

*Make sure to wash and dry jeans before beginning

1. Cuff your pants to the length you like (mine needed to be taken up 3").

2 Measure the cuff then divide in half (mine would be 1 1/2")

3. Flip the fabric under so the fold is on the inside and the original hem is facing out.

4. Pin in place and sew as close to the original stitching as possible. Make sure to use a thread color that matches your jeans

5. Trim the extra fabric on the inside
6. Iron your new hem
7. Enjoy your jeans! :)

  2. I'm 5'4", so I feel ya. I've sacrificed the original hem, bought special "denim hem" thread, but this looks waaaayyy easier! Thanks for the good idea.

  3. You make it look so easy! I'm 5'4" so I generally take all jeans to my cleaners and have them tailored. I may try it myself.... hmmm

  4. I'm thinking you should mention that jeans need to be washed first....my biggest pet peeve is when people hem them before washing, and then the jeans shrink, and now they have flood pants. Clothing companies NEVER pre-shrink their fabric...so anything with a high percentage of cotton is going to shrink after it's been heated...so unless a person is going to hang dry all their cotton, I say wash and dry first!! haha..wow that was long...can you tell how much it bugs me? haha...there's nothing worse than going through the effort of hemming pants just to have them end up too short.

    Lovely instructions tho!

  5. Hey, as a fellow shortie I found this pretty helpful. Mostly I have been shopping in the petite/short sizes to get things to fit right.

  6. Ooh, thanks! Depending on where I shop, I sometimes need to hem jeans to wear with my flats. So thanks--I think this is some sewing I might actually be able to do!!

  8. Thanks Natasha! I do wash first - I didn't think to add it because I automatically wash anything I buy as soon as I take the tags off! I'm with you though - it's such a pain when companies don't pre-shrink their items!! I added it to the tutorial. :)

  10. I can't tell you how helpful this is (and you made it look so easy!). I have the same problem since we're about the same height and I always have to have my jeans hemmed.
